Carlos was born to Max and Lorine Thormalen Gottschalt on September 16, 1944 in Cuero and has been in Cuero all of his life. He attended school in Cuero and after graduating high school, he attended Delmar College in Corpus Christi. He joined the National Guard on December 8, 1963 and was then honorably discharged on December 7, 1969. During his time in the National Guard, he married the love of his life, Nancy Arndt on June 11, 1967 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Lindenau.
