Much like his character on When Calls the Heart, Kavan Smith is also happily married with kids. The actor has starred as Leland “Lee” Coulter, the mayor of Hope Valley and Rosemary’s husband, since Season 2, and his personal life is not that different than Lee’s. While Smith may be with Rosemary Coulter (Pascale Hutton) on Hallmark’s hit drama, off-screen, he’s married to his longtime wife, Corinne Clark. The couple are incredibly private, so much so that it is unclear when they first began dating and what year they tied the knot.
We do know that Clark also works in the entertainment industry and is actually a well-known casting director. With her collaborator Jennifer Page, Clark has run the Vancouver-based casting company Clark & Page Casting Inc. since 2003. Together, the pair have helped cast countless TV shows and movies, including A Million Little Things, Alert: Missing Persons Unit, Resident Alien, Maid, Schmigadoon! and Deadpool. Over the course of her casting career, Clark has been nominated for four Primetime Emmy Awards for her work on The Last of Us, Yellowjackets and The Killing.
Smith and Clark are also the parents of two sons, whom they have shielded from the public eye. In June 2016, Smith shared a rare photo of him and one of his sons on Twitter, though he did not reveal the child’s name. The father of two is very passionate about cooking, and he occasionally shares tidbits about his family when posting photos of his creations. “Haven’t posted food for a while. Didn’t seem the time. But today is my sons BDay and he asked for a lemon meringue pie. Happy 10th kid! Dad,” he captioned a July 2020 Instagram post of a homemade pie. It appears that both of his sons have summer birthdays, as he captioned an August 2020 post: “My other sons bday today. He also asked for a pie. Cherry. Happy Birthday young man! Dad.”

The Hallmarkstar spoke about his passion for food and his family during a June 2018 interview with Parade. “My kids remind me every day that not everything Daddy cooks is great. When they think my cooking ego might be getting a bit too big they jump right in with ‘Don’t forget the pudding Dad. Never forget the pudding,'” he told the outlet. “I made chocolate pudding one time using buttermilk. I don’t know what I was thinking. I’m sure I’ve eaten worse. Like bugs or moldy bread or some other foulness but my kids will never let me forget the pudding.” He added that his wife’s favorite meal of his is risotto. “My wife has a few favorites of mine that she’ll request and I think she probably asks for risotto more than anything else, he said. “I make a mean risotto.”
Smith’s character on When Calls the Heart isn’t as much of a foodie, but he is a devoted husband and father. Leland “Lee” Coulter first came into town in Season 2. Shortly after his arrival, he opened the sawmill, which brought success and jobs to Hope Valley after an explosion closed the mine in the town. He then fell in love with Rosemary and the pair began dating. By Season 3 they had tied the knot, and in the Season 9 finale, the Coulters learned that Rosemary was expecting their first child after years of trying to get pregnant. The couple welcomed their daughter in Season 10, Episode 4, naming her Marigold, or Goldie for short, after Rosemary’s mother. Lee ran for mayor in Season 9, but lost to Mike Hickam (Ben Rosenbaum). He was finally appointed to the position in Season 11, Episode 5.

While speaking to TV Insider after Lee got the job, Smith revealed that he doesn’t know how his character manages his many responsibilities. “You’ve got all the professional stuff obviously, and then you’ve got a baby and all that comes with that,” he said, adding of his real life: “In my own personal life as Kavan Smith, I can’t handle that much, just the kids and a job, and I’m tapped, so I don’t know how Lee does it.” He continued, “One of the things that I’ve always tried to aim for with Lee is sort of this kind of nothing gets him down quality, that, no matter what happens, he’s buoyant and he doesn’t get upset.”
