16 Best Artisan Bakeries in Prague (2024) as recommended by a local – View from Prague (2024)

16 Best Artisan Bakeries in Prague (2024) as recommended by a local (and a baker…), including locations, prices, opening times and what’s best to buy.

In Prague, you can find plenty of small bakeries, but only a few of them try to constantly come up with something new, improve their recipes, and surprise their customers. Saying that I know that quality means a higher price, so I’ve also included my favourite standard bakeries that are perfect for everyday bread, cakes and morning pastries.

As somebody, who bakes bread at home, has sold sourdough bread at local markets and used to run bread baking courses, I truly appreciate the hard work that goes into baking bread. And I’m really happy to see that artisan bakeries in Prague are flourishing.

I’ve personally tried all the bakeries over the last few years and I’m happy to recommend them to my friends and family and now to you! So, without further ado, here is my favourite list of the 16 best bakeries in Prague.

1. William & Thomas

Location: Plzeňská 3378 /138, 150 00 Prague 5 (5 minutes from Andel Underground Station by tram number 9, 10, 15 or 16, tram stop Klamovka

Opening Times: Monday – Friday, 7.30 am – 6.30 pm, Saturday 8 am – 4 pm, Sunday – Closed

This is totally one of my absolute favourite places to get fresh bread in Smichov.

This is a brand new bakery opened this year by two enthusiastic owners called Vilem and Tomas, who already have two successful bakery branches in Brno. Like many new artisan bakeries in Prague, they didn’t come from a food background (in fact there are professional golf players and instructors!) and got into baking because they wanted to recreate the wonderful French patisserie that they remembered from their travels.

Croissants are still their main bakes, but they also make amazing sourdough bread, pain de champagne and baguettes. Their speciality is ‘krolac’ which is traditional Czech style ‘kolac’ cake made with croissant dough and Czech type of cake filling. I’ve tried the walnut krolac and it was pure heaven! The pain de champagne (small 60 CZK, large 90 CZK) made a delicious sandwich and stayed nice and soft for a few days and the taste was great too.

Everything is baked freshly on the premises and because the bakery has a certain capacity, not all the products are baked every day. This means that every day, you get to choose from a different range of breads and pastries.

You can also have a takeaway coffee and even eat your pastries in the shop, while you watch the bread being made and baked. There are also benches in front of the shop.

2. Artic Bakehouse

Location:

  • Ujezd 11, Lesser Town, Prague 1 (close to the Petrin Cable Car)
  • Myslikova 187/13, Prague 1, New Town (close to the Dancing House)
  • Stefanikova 31, Smichov, Prague 5 (close to Kinsky Garden or Andel Underground Station)
  • Na Porici 31, Florenc, Prague 1

Opening Times: Monday to Sunday; 7 am – 7.30 pm

The Artic Bakekouse was started in 2019 by two friends from Iceland who decided to open a sourdough bakery in Prague. They were a great hit from the start, because traditional Czech bread, is loosely based on sourdough (as in has the taste, but it’s still made with yeast) so local people appreciated the full flavour of a proper sourdough bread. I’m still going through the menu, but so far everything I’ve tasted is really good.

The ‘Artic Monk’ bread 145 CZK is a lighter version of sourdough bread perfect for toast or sandwiches and the ‘Old Charles’ 145 CZK has amazing flavour because of whole rye flour, anise and cumin seeds. Apart from the sourdough breads, bagels and banquettes, you can also taste cinnamon or caramel rolls (70 CZK), traditional fried balls that resemble doughnuts (35 CZK), filled rolls, croissants (from 55 CZK), or cookies (50 CZK). They also offer great coffee and have ready-made sandwiches that you can take with you for a stroll around the town or a picnic.

3. Kus Kolace

Location: Korunni 90, Vinohrady, Prague 2

Opening Times: Monday – Friday: 8 am – 5 pm, Saturday 9 am – 2 pm, Sunday – Closed

This little bakery always sells out well before its closing time, so come in early if you want to get your piece of cake! The name ‘Kus Kolace’ means something like ‘ a piece of cake’ and they mainly bake traditional Czech cakes called ‘kolace’. These are baked with sweet bread dough and topped with blueberries, plums, apples and other fruit and sweet crumble topping.

Cakes start from 65 CZK and they are certainly worth the price! Everything is baked on the premises and you can watch the baking as you wait in the queue (oh, yes, the cakes are so good, you’ll have to queue for them!)

4. Pekarna Praktika

Location:

  • Sokolovská 6/85, 183 00 Praha 8-Karlín
  • Bělehradská 66, 120 00 Praha 2-Vinohrady

Opening times: 7.30 – 6.30 pm (but arrive early for the best selection of baked goodies)

This artisan bakery is very different from the others because here they even mill their own flour on the premises! They make amazing bread with large open crumb and chewy crust. Their signature rye bread has high hydration (aka it’s very soft inside) and is baked at high temperatures to get a darker-coloured crust.

In addition to various types of bread, you can also buy perfect doughnuts with jam and vanilla, chocolate croissants, peanut cookies, or cinnamon rolls sprinkled with almonds. The traditional Czech cakes ‘kolace’ is baked here with freshly milled rye flour, which is very different to any other bakery as these are usually baked with white bread flour. This makes the cakes much healthier than from a traditional bakery.

When you visit you can usually taste the bread that’s currently being baked and have even takeaway coffee with your pastries. If there are any leftovers from the previous day, these are usually reduced by 30% of the original price. The prices are considerably higher than other bakeries, as everything is freshly baked on the premises by experienced bakers.

5. Manssons

Location: Bilkova 8, Old Town, Prague 1

Opening Times: Monday to Friday: 7 am – 6 pm, Saturday and Sunday 8 am – 6 pm.

The owners of this artisan bakery which was established back in 1999 are a married couple – Klára and Lars, who are Danish. Their inspiration comes from traditional Danish baking and their breads include rye bread with seeds, Danish sweet pastries made from puff pastry with vanilla pudding or jam. They also offer Italian bread with dried tomatoes and olives or nutty bread with fruit, which is equally delicious.

Everything is baked on the premises based on traditional recipes and without any preservatives. The bakery also supplies its bread and pastries to prestigious hotels, shops, and restaurants in Prague. Traditional bread starts from 70 CZK for a small or half a loaf to 100-120CZK for a whole loaf. Speciality breads, such as fruits stone age bread with dried apricots, cranberries and pumpkin seeds start from 230 CZK. Pastries are from 50-75 CZK depending on filling and size.

6. Alf & Bet

Location: Světova 454/2, 180 00 Prague 8-Libeň (close to Palmovka Underground Station)

Opening Times: Monday – Friday: 8 am – 6 pm, Saturday and Sunday – 9 am – 5 pm

Alf & Bet is another example of a successful artisan bakery started by non-bakers and that’s not me saying that – the founders are happy about sharing their humble beginnings themselves! But like with other bakeries, the passion and hunger for great bread more than makes up for an education in a culinary school.

Their breads use traditional recipes based on sourdough with a long fermentation process and using heritage and speciality flours. They also roast a great coffee, so you can have your caffeine fix and watch the bread being baked in front of you. The bakery is set in a former factory, so it has amazing space, which smells amazingly with freshly baked bread.

Alf & Bet focuses mainly on bread, but also bakes cakes, croissants, poppy seeds rolls and other delicious treats. You can also pick up ready-made sandwiches made from their delicious bread.

The breads start at 95 – 120 CZK and sweet pastries are 55-75 CZK

7. Kro Bakery

Location:

  • Moskevska 30, Vrsovice, Prague 10
  • Vinohradska 64, Zizkov, Prague 3 (close to Jiriho z Podebrad Square & Underground)

Opening Times: Monday – Friday, 8 am – 7 pm, Saturday 9 am – 5-7 pm, Sunday – closed (Moskevska), Sunday 9 am – 5 pm (Vinohradska)

Established by chef Vojta Vaclavik in 2019, Kro Bakery bakes amazing sourdough bread using local flour milled in a stone mill in Krišnův Dvůr and the Pekárek Mill in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. All their bread is baked at their Vrsovice branch and then delivered to other smaller branches across Prague. You can also pop in for sandwiches, light lunch and delicious drinks.

8. Nase Toustarna (Our Toast Shop)

Location: Delnicka 56, Holesovice, Prague 7

Opening Times: Monday – Friday: 7.30-5 pm (closed at weekends)

This is a fabulous bakery using traditional recipes made with honest ingredients and baked fresh on-site. You can watch the bread being baked by the bakers and choose your bread fresh out of the oven. Nase Toustarna bakes anything from traditional breads, rolls, and baguettes to cinnamon swirls, and traditional Czech cakes (kolace) filled with different sweet fillings and muffins. They also make delicious coffee to go, hot chocolate and speciality tea.

9. Etapa

Location: Urxova 479/6, Karlin, Prague 8

Opening times: Monday – Friday 9 am – 6 pm, Saturday, Sunday (and holidays) 9 am – 5 pm

This bakery (also a great breakfast, brunch and light lunch place) is super popular with local people because it bakes fresh bread, rolls and cakes using traditional methods and everything is baked on-site. Etapa also focuses on in-season ingredients sourced from local Czech farmers, that they use for their breakfast and brunch menu.

Wholemeal bread start from 110 CZK, Cinnamon & Cardamon swirl is 80 CZK, danish with fruit is 105 CZK, traditional sweet roll (loupak) is 49 CZK or a cake with vanilla cream and fruit is 75 CZK.

10. Eska

Location: Pernerova 49, Karlín, 186 00, Prague8

Opening Times: Monday – Friday: 7 am – 7 pm, Saturday – Sunday: 8 am – 6 pm

Traditional bread baked with sourdough starter and organic flour. You can either buy the bread to take away or have a tasty sandwich prepared for you and eat it on the spot. Apart from bread, they also bake incredible poppy seed rolls, which are not only huge but also fluffy.

11. Oh Deer Bakery (the Luna Bakery)

Location: Purkynova 2, Prague 1 (next to Narodni Trida Underground and tram stop)

Opening Times: Monday – Sunday: 9 am – 7 pm

This bakery is famous for creating the first Czech cronuts – the cross-over between croissant and doughnut. And it tastes just like it sounds – delicious, but super sweet! The cronut is topped with all sorts of sweet sauces, fruit, chocolate or nuts.

The Czech cronuts are apparently less sweet than their American versions and also slightly more affordable than in the USA. They will still set you back a good 95-120 CZK. I have to say, that I still find them very, very sweet and usually share them with somebody because they are just so big! If you want to try something a little less sweet, I recommend their ‘Bombolone’ (70 CZK), which is a Czech version of a doughnut with different sweet or fruit fillings.

12. Nas Chleb (Our Bread)

Location:

  • Opletalova 1535/4, 110 00 Praha 1
  • Pohořelec 146/9, 118 00 Praha 1
  • Vinohradská 48, 120 00 Praha 2 (closed at the weekends)

Opening Times: Monday – Friday 7 am – 7 pm, Saturday 9 or 10 am – 5 or 7 pm, Sunday – Closed

This bakery has many branches across Prague and quite a few in the centre and I’ve also seen their stall at Andel Farmer’s Markets in Prague 5.

‘Nas Chleb’ is a family-owned bakery, founded over 25 years ago in Jablonec nad Nisou, where all the bread is still baked and then distributed into all the branches.

The bread recipes are based on traditional recipes and ingredients and everything is still made by hand using the best ingredients. The prices are slightly higher than in regular supermarkets, but slightly lower than in some artisan bakeries in Prague.

13. Slovenske Delikatesy

Location: Bubenské nábř. 306/13, 170 00 Prague 7-Holešovice (inside the Holesovice Market area, hall number 22)

Opening times: Tuesday – Friday 7 am – 5 pm, Saturday 7 am – 2 pm, Monday – Closed

This is a down-to-earth bakery, that bakes great bread, rolls and cakes. The prices are very reasonable and the bread assortment changes with seasons.

Apart from freshly baked bread, rolls and traditional cakes, you can also buy other Slovak-inspired deli food, such as sausages, ham, goat’s cheese, jams and other traditional Slovak foods.

14. Antoninovo Pekarstvi

Location:

  • Stefanikova, Smichov, Prague 5
  • Laubova 4, Prague 3
  • Strossmayerovo náměstí 11, Prague 7
  • Sokolovská 55, Prague 8
  • Moskevská 38, Prague 10

Opening Times: Monday to Sunday: 7 am – 7.30 pm

Antonín’s first bakery opened in 2014 and now it has a network of six artisan bakeries in Vinohrady, Vršovice, Karlín, Holesovice, Smichov and Letná.

I really like their wheat and rye flour bread (from 60 CZK), potato sourdough bread and whole-grain rolls. They also make delicious traditional Czech cakes ‘kolace’ (from 35CZK), apple strudel (45 CZK), Cream Cheesecake with apricots (45 CZK), gingerbread tray bakes (45 CZK) or poppy seeds rolls for breakfast (18 CZK).

All of Antonín’s bakeries make all their products themselves on premises – from baked goods to sandwich spreads, decorated open sandwiches, lemonades, soups, and desserts. The bakeries also have tables, so that you can get a coffee or tea and enjoy your freshly baked rolls, whilst watching the staff shaping and baking the breads, pastries and rolls.

15. Kabat Bakery

Location: There are over 32 locations (usually at the entrance of Underground stations), but I’ve listed the ones close to the Prague centre

  • Mustek Underground Station – lower ground before you enter the station
  • Florenc Underground – outside the entrance
  • Nadrazni 25, Andel Underground (inside Albert Supermarket)
  • Plzenska 8 (inside Novy Smichov Shopping Centre at Andel Underground)
  • Zlicin Underground – as you walk out of the underground
  • Francouzska 25, Vinohrady, Prague 2
  • Taboritska 24, Olsanske Namesti, Zizkov, Prague 3

Opening Times: Monday – Friday: 6 am – 7 or 9 pm, Saturday 7 am -2 pm (and smaller branches are also closed), Sunday – mainly closed apart from the large branches at Novy Smichov

I also wanted to mention the everyday bakeries that local people go to, which are more budget-friendly. Kabat Bakery is a family family-owned bakery started in 1992 using traditional recipes and baking Czech bread, rolls, filled cakes, strudel and Linzen cookies.

Kabat bakery is my favourite place to buy ready-made filled rolls (their cranberry seeded roll with mozzarella cheese is delicious 60 CZK) and I can’t get enough of the filled ‘Moravian Bread Roll’ (38 CZK).

But one of my favourite bakes from Kabat bakery is the Prague Cake (42 CZK). This is a light brioche-like dough filled with vanilla pudding cream and topped with cinnamon crumble. It’s a very traditional cake, but you won’t find it anywhere else (apart from here and Liberske Lahudky – Albert supermarket has a version too, but it’s not as nice as these two). The Prague Cake is not particularly sweet, which is one of the things I really like about it. Once you’ve tried it, it’s difficult to resist it, which is why this cake always makes it on my walking trips out from Prague.

The savoury potato flat cake or the savoury lard cake is brilliant too, as well as the traditional cherry cake called ‘bublanina’. They also make seasonal cakes like mazanec for Easter and vanocka for Christmas and they make smaller versions, which is handy if you want to just try them.

Large breads start from 55 CZK, speciality breads from 75 CZK and cakes from 10 CZK for small to 42 CZK for large.

16. Liberske Lahudky

Location: There are about 16 different locations in Prague, but I’ve chosen the branches that are the closest to the centre

  • Vodičkova 730/9, Old Town, Prague 1 (close to Wenceslas Square)
  • Biskupská 1065/1, Old Town, Prague 1 (close to the White Swan department store)
  • Ostrovskeho 33/2, Na Knizeci – Andel Underground Station

Opening Times: Monday – Friday: 6.30 am – 7 pm, Saturday – Sunday: 8 am – 6 pm (smaller branches close earlier at the weekend)

Another great place where you can get ready-made sandwiches, cakes, fresh bread, great poppy seeds rolls and also deli food, such as ready-made fried chicken schnitzel or fried cheese. The shops are usually quite small, but they offer a variety of ready-made open sandwiches (chlebicky), filled sandwiches and traditional pastries and cakes for very reasonable prices.

This bakery is the only other bakery in Prague, that makes my favourite Prague cake. You can also get a take-out coffee, but this is not a sit-down kind of place as most people quickly buy their goodies and take them home.

This is a local place and most people already know what they want before they walk in and the staff are used to serving the customers super fast. There is no seating inside, but you can stand and eat at the countertop windows, or the staff will package your food to go.
